The Roadrunner Rag, September, 2006, by Wendell Whitaker
Our club distinguished itself on several fronts at the recent Heart of the West District Convention at the El Conquistador Hotel on August 11th – 13th. Zippy Gross received a Distinguished President Award. Zippy certainly did an outstanding job during her two years as President and richly deserves this recognition. Kathy Spude was chosen as Governor-Elect of the HOTW District. Kathy has many years of distinguished service to our club and the district which gives us a Roadrunner as District Governor. We know she will make us all proud. Our Club also received recognition for having contributed $100/member to the Civitan International Foundation.
Plans are being formulated for our annual Awards and Installation Dinner. Details will be forthcoming.
We have several new members who do not have name tags as yet. President Ana will be circulating a sheet at an upcoming meeting to identify those members. October 14 & 15 our club will be selling beer at the Desert Thunder Rodeo. Besides being a hell of a lot of fun, we make a pretty good amount of money for our charitable pursuits. Clint is signing up members for specific shifts for the weekend. Be prompt, please! This is a great opportunity to bring prospective new members who like to drink beer and have mucho gusto fun!
Our upcoming commitments for the KUAT Telethons scheduled for December 6th then again on March 7th & June 14th. We get great TV exposure from this event.
Charlie Whitehall has indicated that he will be obtaining another autographed ‘U of A’ Autographed Basketball for our fund raising efforts. Isn’t it amazing the same individual has won the basketball the last two years!
Your Board of Directors recognizes we have been falling short and have taken steps to shore up our finances. Once the final language has been determined we will announce the changes at a regular meeting.
Brandon Blair will be making arrangements for Roadrunner to have the first water stop on the Tour de Tucson. Again this is a great opportunity to bring family or friends to enjoy this Tucson Tradition!
As Ana’s year as Club President is coming to a close and with the anticipation of Kathy’s new regime taking over the helm we have lots of exciting times ahead including several Special Olympics events.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to Mike & Rene Flowers as they deal with the illness of Rene’s Mom.
