THE ROADRUNNER RAG by Wendell Whitaker, editor 7/2006
A very warm welcome to our many new members. These include Dr. Rick Liggett, Karen King, Shea-Lynn Tourney, Mary Wilcox, & Ron Canham. We are very happy and proud to have you with us. The life-blood and the very existence of Roadrunner Civitan depends upon the steady recruitment of many new members such as you. The three main thrusts of Civitan are Service, Knowledge & Fellowship. Belonging to Civitan enables one to give something back to the community, provides a way to keep in touch with the goings on in Tucson while reaping the benefits of associating with and enjoying the fellowship of many quality people.
Please remember that our next meeting on July 19th will not be at the Lodge on the Desert but rather at the Beacon Group on Glenn just East of Oracle. Beacon trains the Developmentally Disabled to work and earn a pay check giving them greater self esteem and a better quality of life. Lunch will be served.
The speaker for the August 2nd meeting will be Dr. Jaswinder Ghuman who will bring us up to date on Autism Research. Then on August 16th Ron Holly will enlighten us on the power and hazards of Lightning. There will be a membership recruitment meeting on Sept. 6th. On Sept., 20th Lisa Hopper from World Care will be with us.
The next Entre Amigos is on Friday, July 14th @ 5:30pm. The Care Fair will be held on July 28th at the Pueblo High School @ 3500 S. 12th. Avenue. In the past our members have participated in distributing bicycle helmets and school supplies for the children’s upcoming academic year.
The Civitan International Convention will be held in Detroit, Mi. from July 25th – 30th both Carl Mangelsdorf & Kathy Spude will be representing us there! Also, the ‘Heart of the West District Meeting’ will be held at the Conquistador Resort on North Oracle August 11th & 12th. Our Roadrunner Club will pay the registration fee for any of our members attending.
Our Roadrunner Board of Directors meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Old Pueblo Grille, 6pm. All members are encouraged to come out for a good time.
One way for a new member to discover what Roadrunner Civitan is about is to participate in a project. The upcoming Care Fair traditionally attracts a lot of our membership and provides an excellent opportunity for fellowship in addition to helping some of the less fortunate of Tucson. A lunch is provided.
Mucho congratulations to both Denise & Brandon Blair on the birth of their daughter, Alexa Marie. In no time at all we expect to see her riding in the Tour de Tucson and leading a Jr. Civitan Club!
Due to vacations and conventions the July Board Meeting has been postponed to the last Wednesday in August!
