Encounters with Luke

1) Shayne - I meet Luke Walton at a car dealership with the other to seniors from the U of A. He was really nice. I got my picture taken with him.

2) Elizabeth - First off, let me say that I had a professor named Dr. Swaim last spring semester at the UA. She's fabulous and set up the meeting... she also happens to be the Faculty Fellow for the AD, and that's why she seems to have so much pull with the athletes. Breonna and Pam are both friends of mine that were also there and laughing at me the whole time. Anyway, here goes.

We get to Dr. Swaim's office at about quarter after noon, and she comes in with Breonna and tells me that they're not on the floor right now. They, of course, being Luke and Richard Jefferson. So Breonna, Pam, and I go sit in Dr. Swaim's office, and I can see in the reflection of the mirror that she's talking to somebody. She says "Jason, come here, I want you to meet some people." In walks Dr. Swaim and JASON GARDNER!!! I did a quick intake of breath when he walked in the door. Jason Gardner!! Can you believe it? He shakes hands with all of us and then puts his arm around Dr. Swaim and says "This is the nicest lady in the world. You hurt her and I'll be back." Pam and I both decided that it would've been intimidating had it not been very sweet and had he been more then six inches taller than us.

Dr. Swaim turns back to Jason and says that we're here to meet Luke and Richard, and he tells us that they're out on the floor talking to the kids. So the four of us go out and watch some guy talk and talk and talk while Richard's demonstrating the drills that he's talking about. (The guy that was talking is the youngest assistant coach in the NBA, according to Luke.) So we're watching and up walks AJ BRAMLETT and MILES SIMON, as is "Simon says Championship" Miles Simon. Meeting Miles Simon was just about as good as meeting Luke. Almost.

So the guy continues to talk and Richard continues to run drills. Dr. Swaim says that they better hurry up because she doesn't have much time left. So she goes around to the other door, walks over to Luke, taps him on the shoulder, and points to where the three of us are. He looked in our direction and the three of us moved away from the door as not to be seen. Dr. Swaim then walks over with him. Granted this takes awhile because they're on the other side of the gym. I'm silently freaking out, occasionally sneaking glances to see where they are in relation to where we were. They walked through the door, and I think my heart stopped for a minute. She introduces us, and she must've said something along the lines of: "There's this girl Liz, she's crazy nuts about you, humor her, be nice" because she points to me and he says: "Liz!" and wraps me in a big Luke Walton bear hug. And out of all the things that could've been going through my head during this moment the only thing that went through it was "Gosh, you're tall." This actually left my mouth too, you know, because my nose was at, like, his belly button. But he couldn't of smelled bad because I would've remembered that, I think I remember a very clean smell... and the muscles... guh.

So the five of us are talking, and he's just chilling with his hand messing with the door frame because, you know, it's only inches above his head. So Dr. Swaim starts asking questions about the camp, and we all turn and look back at what's going on (somewhere in here he had wrapped his arm around my shoulders). Then they started talking about Europe because Luke and Richard are leaving with ten other NBA players for some sort of tour. She tells him that he needs to go into the mountains and go to the beaches and he says that the guys that he's going with aren't really into the mountains and the beach. They're there to party. A few references to museums (including the Heineken museum...), marijuana, and some kids running up asking for autographs, we come to pictures.

I FORGOT A CAMERA!!!

He looked at me a bit perplexed as to why exactly I forgot a camera. So we work it out that the three of us can have our pictures taken with the rest of the campers. Breonna goes, Pam goes, and then it's my turn. "Liz! My girl! Come on!" Oh. My. God. I really hope that I wasn't as pink as I thought I was. He slings an arm around me and snap! goes the picture. I say thank you and smile and we leave.
