Waltons unite in victory, San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) January 18, 1996 Author: STEVE BRAND; Staff Writer
Although there were only two Waltons on the court yesterday, it must have seemed to Lincoln Prep that there were five.
Senior Nate Walton scored 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and sophomore brother Luke had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead top-ranked USDHS to an 83-67 Western League victory over the host Hornets.
The brothers used nifty spin moves inside for bunches of points.
"I learned that from my brother," said a smiling Luke, the 6-foot-7 next-to-youngest son of former UCLA and NBA standout Bill Walton. "We practice against each other three hours a day. He has a lot of great moves.
"I've played against older players like (senior) Matt Blakely and my older brother (Adam) all my life and that helped in a game like this."
USDHS coach Jim Tomey says when he walks into the Lincoln Prep gym, he fully expects to see a team that plays 50 percent better there than on the road.
"They play with a greater effort, with more emotion," said Tomey, who was only too happy to walk away with a 16-point win after leading just 43-42 halfway through the third quarter.
No doubt about it, Lincoln (12-7, 2-2) is improving.
The Hornets moved the ball well, cut down on turnovers and got a fine 26-point, 12-rebound performance from Duane Fore. The problem: Fore was the only Lincoln player to play strongly all four quarters.
Meanwhile, the Waltons were the epitome of consistency.
Nate scored six points and had three rebounds in each of the first three quarters. Luke had 18 points after three quarters but sat out half of the fourth quarter with four fouls.
And the Dons (15-2, 4-0) got more help.
Blakely scored 14 points and sophomore point guard David Abramowitz 11 in support of the Waltons.
"We've done that most of the year," said Tomey. "Usually, Nate and Matt score in the 20s and we'll get double-figure scoring from two others. In this game, Chad Wells came off the bench and gave us some serious minutes in the third quarter."
USDHS, ranked 11th in the state overall and winner of five straight, jumped to an 11-point lead in the second quarter but could not hold it against the aggressive Hornets.
