Walton Gang, the next generation, may gather at USDHS, San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) April 29, 1996 Author: TOM SHANAHAN
The Walton Era isn't over at University of San Diego High School, even though Nate Walton is a senior and bound for Princeton. The best may be yet to come.
USDHS, the Southern California Regional Division III runner-up last season, could in the near future feature four players 6-foot-10 or taller as well as a veteran starter at point guard.
In addition to Luke Walton (6-8), Blake Jensen (6-10) and point guard David Abramowitz (5-11) -- each one a sophomore on the varsity last season -- Luke's younger brother and cousin are expected to join him at Uni in the fall as freshmen.
Chris Walton, Luke's brother, is 6-4. Kam Walton, Luke's cousin, is 6-6. Both, like Luke, are still growing.
Luke and Chris are the sons of former NBA great Bill Walton. Kam is the son of Bruce Walton, the former offensive lineman with the Dallas Cowboys, who is Bill's older brother.
Chris and Kam Walton recently helped Rancho Santa Fe's eighth-grade team to the state junior high title. Teams had to have three or fewer losses against junior high competition to be invited. RSF was 31-0 and won three games in the tournament to win the title and finish 34-0.
RSF physical education teacher and basketball coach David McClurg, who stands 5-9, is smaller than all eight of his players.
"They're an amazing group," said McClurg. "We played in tournaments where the other teams were all-star teams."
McClurg on Kam Walton: "He's a tremendous shot blocker. He has great timing. He's without a doubt the best shot blocker in the state in his age group."
McClurg on Chris Walton: "He's a strong rebounder and good offensive player. I could see him as a (shooting) guard in high school."
The Waltons will be joined at Uni by David Bradley, a 5-10 guard for RSF. His father, Dennis Bradley, played at San Diego State in the mid-1960s.
